Stress: How Does It Relate to Chiropractic Care?

Stress comes in several different forms. Emotional stress such as family problems, divorce, loss of a loved one can lead to chemical stress on your body from over-caffeinating, overeating, and overmedicating. There are also physical stresses which are caused from improper lifting, accidents, obesity, or repetitive motions, which results in prolonged muscle tension and contraction.

How Your Body Responds To Stress

Although we can not tell your boss to get off your case (large cause of stress for many overworked of Americans), we can provide high quality chiropractic care to treat the effects of chronic stress by focusing on the spine, which is the root of the nervous system.

When your body is under stress, the body’s “fight or flight” response is triggered. Your heart beats faster and your senses become more acute. While this defense mechanism is from historic times and was necessary in small doses, our modern societies are now over stressed. Chronic stress can cause high blood pressure, risk for heart disease, and tension and pain throughout your muscles and joints. This can lead to vertebral subluxation, which is a spinal joint dysfunction that interferes with the body’s ability to function properly.

Let’s Fix The Muscle Tension

As subluxation occurs, this leads to uneven pressure in the bone structure which causes the spine to misalign or for nerves to become irritated. Proper treatments due to physical stress are assessed at Reiss Chiropractic, where we can determine which modality is best to treat the injury. After an adjustment, the patient’s muscle tension is released, nerve irritation is reduced, blood circulation improves, and you as a patient feel a lot better since your spine is now properly aligned. When you’re not receiving treatment at Reiss Chiropractic, there are be simple solutions such as stretches which reduce neck, back, and shoulder tension that we teach you in the office and you are able to implement at home or at work.

During your consultation with our chiropractors, we will ask questions to determine what areas of your life are contributing to your stress. Through adjustments and life changes, the reduction in daily stress can help to mitigate and eventually eliminate the pain you are experiencing. When pain in the muscles and joints is a result of carrying severe excess weight, the patient will need to change their lifestyle to include a healthy diet and exercise routine for the treatments to be most effective.
